From Ori to Caviar: Why Retail Matters to the Way We Build

For Syzygy, retail, design, and development have always been closely connected. That relationship can be traced back to Lonsdale Street in Braddon, where our director Nik’s involvement in Ori developed alongside his work in independent retail. At the time, Braddon looked very different to the neighbourhood we know today, and Nik was heavily involved in creating retail experiences and contributing to the emerging energy of the street.

Where it started: Ori

Ori became an important step in Nik’s move into development. When he became more involved in the project, one of his first focuses was the facade, seeing an opportunity to give the building a stronger identity and bring more creativity to its street presence.

It was an early expression of an idea that continues to shape Syzygy today: a building should do more than occupy a site. It should contribute to the character, activity, and experience of the neighbourhood around it.

Staying connected through Caviar

That connection to retail continues through Nik’s homewares and lifestyle boutique shop located in Ori, Caviar Design Shop. For him, staying close to the retail world provides an ongoing source of design inspiration. Interiors, architecture, industrial design, fashion, and homewares are constantly influencing one another. Materials, colours and finishes can move between disciplines and inspire ideas on a completely different scale.

Just as importantly, retail keeps him connected to people. Conversations with customers provide an immediate understanding of what people are drawn to, what they value in their homes, and how they want their spaces to feel. That insight helps create a more personal understanding of what people want from apartments, buildings, and neighbourhoods.

The role of local retail in placemaking

Caviar is one part of a much broader local retail community in Braddon. Independent retailers, cafés, restaurants, designers and makers all contribute to the character of the area, giving people reasons to walk the street, spend time there and keep coming back. Over time, those businesses become part of the identity of a place.

For Syzygy, that is an important part of placemaking. Buildings provide the framework, but local businesses and the people around them bring streets to life. From Ori to Caviar, the connection between retail and development is a reminder that the best places are shaped not only by how they are designed, but by how people experience them every day.
